December has capped off a milestone year for Launceston Airport, with a record 146,682 passengers travelling through the airport.
The result was driven by the busy festive travel period and a seasonal increase in airline seat capacity from Brisbane and Sydney.
December’s performance brings total passenger numbers for 2025 to 1,465,930 travellers, making it the busiest year ever at Tasmania’s northern gateway.
The airport is now preparing for what's expected to be its busiest day in history on Friday, as Foo Fighters fans flock to Launceston ahead of the band’s only Australian concert on Saturday 24 January.
Around 25,000 travellers will move through Launceston Airport over the Australia Day long weekend with Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar adding additional flights to cater for the increase in demand.
Launceston Airport CEO Katie Cooper said the December results come on the back of a landmark year for the airport, with 2026 already off to a strong start.
“December really punctuated a big year of growth for us, marking our eighth consecutive month of record passenger numbers and confirming 2025 as the busiest year in our history.
"Last year was transformative for Launceston Airport with significant investment in our airfield, terminal and network, reinforcing our position as one of Tasmania's key economic enablers and there’s no sign of things slowing down.
“We expect Friday before the Australia Day long weekend will be our single busiest day in history, with more than 6,500 travellers forecast to pass through our terminals.
“We will have additional team members on the ground to support passengers and ensure a smooth experience for people as they arrive and depart."
SkyBus transfers will operate from the airport to the CBD on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and from Launceston to the airport on Sunday and Monday.
