The biggest terminal transformation in more than 20 years at Launceston Airport has reached a key milestone today with the opening of Kanamaluka.
Named from the Aboriginal word for Tamar River, Kanamaluka's all-day dining menu includes an incredible array of Tasmanian local produce including local pastries, honey, jams and a big breakfast complete with Tasmanian sausages.
Operated by SSP, the new café complete with world-class airfield views will serve a record number of travellers as the airport celebrates two of its busiest months on record.
Almost a quarter of a million passengers made their way through the airport during the last two months, with September and October both exceeding all-time highs as the airport welcomed 106,671 and 128,615 respectively.
Launceston Airport Head of Planning, Development and Customer Ilya Brucksch said the new café will prove a favourite with passengers.
"Our vision with our terminal redevelopment is to showcase the amazing region this airport sits within," he said.
"With Liv Eat, The Launceston Store, Gatty's Bar and Kitchen and now Kanamaluka café open passengers can experience a true taste of Tassie while relaxing in one of the most picturesque departures halls in the country.
"I'm excited for people to experience Kanamaluka café - the big breakfast paired with a cup of Ritual Coffee Roasters coffee is a must.
"These upgrades are not only trying to showcase the local regions food but also the landscape, with everything from our architecture to our floor to ceiling windows looking out across to Ben Lomond designed to give passengers a bespoke Tasmanian experience.
"We're the gateway to Tasmania for a record number of passengers so it's important that their first and last impression of our state is a memorable and positive one.
"We're a barometer for tourism into Tasmania and the signs are really positive. Six out of the first ten months of this year have been the busiest on record."
"This terminal transformation puts us well on the road to realising our vision of becoming Australia's favourite regional airport.
