Foo Fighters headline a record-breaking month for Launceston Airport

Media Release

The Foo Fighters in concert with a record-breaking school holiday period have helped Launceston Airport register the busiest month in its 95-year history.

A total of 160,791 travellers made their way through Tasmania’s northern gateway across the month of January, the ninth consecutive record month for the airport.

The Friday before the Foo Fighters concert was the busiest day ever at Launceston Airport with 6,868 travellers, which represents a 12.5 per cent increase on the previous record of 6,114 set on the 2nd of January last year.

Increased services and capacity from Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia contributed to a total of 23,642 travellers through the airport across the Australia Day long weekend as Foo Fighters fans from around the country descended on Launceston.

Launceston Airport CEO Katie Cooper said the airport was proud to play its role in showcasing Launceston to a record new audience.

As the gateway into the heart of Tasmania, we are often the first and last impression of this amazing state, and we’ve done a lot of work ensuring our airport reflects the beauty and diversity of the region.

“Our recent upgrades deliver travellers a uniquely Tasmanian experience here at the airport, with local products and producers showcased across the new food and beverage outlets along with an expanded Launceston Store.

“These numbers reinforce the importance of major events in attracting new and diverse travellers to the region and we know a busy arrivals hall here translates to busy pubs, hotels and restaurants across northern Tasmania.”
