2015 Year-end passenger numbers show improving trend

Launceston Airport capped off an exciting year of transformation with strong passenger growth in the final quarter and the busiest December on record.

Although overall domestic and regional passenger numbers in 2015 grew by just 0.2 percent to 1.289 million, the year ended on a high note with 3.7 percent year-on-year growth in Quarter 4 and around 134,000 passengers travelling in December.

The upturn at the end of the year was pleasing for the airport, which has invested around $20 million in infrastructure to improve ground transport access, parking, terminal facilities and the runway overlay.

In anticipation of a busy summer period, airlines added additional flights including Virgin Australia’s new Launceston-Brisbane direct service and an increased frequency for Jetstar’s daily Melbourne service.

Launceston Airport, recognised as the Australian Airport Association’s Major Airport of the Year in 2015, is a key tourist gateway to Tasmania, where air travel delivers almost 90 percent of visitors to the state.

Quotes attributable to Paul Hodgen, General Manager Launceston Airport

“The upturn in passenger numbers noted towards the end of 2015, which continued into the summer season, is a pleasing trend following the relatively flat domestic demand earlier in the year.”

“The upturn comes during a time of significant investment in the airport. This includes transformation of the terminal which will deliver increased retail variety, improved dining options, and the introduction of free Wi-Fi.”

“Continued growth in air travel is critical to delivering the State Government’s goal of attracting a record  1.5 million visitors to Tasmania by 2020.”
